First Listen: KSSJ (Radio 94.7) Sacramento, Calif.
Written Mar. 7, 2010 by Sean Ross in Terrestrial Radio with 23 Comments
Just wanted to give you a First Listen to what our friends at Entercom launched in Sacramento, Calif., earlier this week--a market that had been without Alternative since KWOD flipped to all-'90s last spring. "It's great to have a choice again," says one liner. "Why pay for your music? Let our music sponsors pay for it," says another. Radio 94.7, which replaced Smooth Jazz, is low-key in the spirit of sister KNRK Portland, Ore., or Clear Channel's WRFF (Radio 104.5) Philadelphia. Here's the station at 2 p.m. yesterday (March 6).
Tonic, "If You Could Only See"
Bush, "Come Down"
Death Cab For Cutie, "I Will Possess Your Heart"
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Scar Tissue"
Muse, "Starlight"
Beck, "Devil's Haircut"
MGMT, "Kids"
Incubus, "I Wish You Were Here"
Sublime, "What I Got"
Live, "Selling The Drama"
Kings Of Leon, "Sex On Fire"

I love it! We needed Alternative back in Sactown.
We are going to miss the jazz though.
I listen to this station on my way to work every morning. I'm so upset!
3/8/10 I heard a song this morning on my way to work around 7:45-50 am I'd like to know the name and artist Thanks!! Great music..I love it!!!
I *LOVE* the new 94.7!
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Smooth Jazz on KSSJ (that's how I found out about this new station so fast, of course)! But I was a die hard KWOD fan and I'm SO excited to have Radio 94.7 to listen to! PLEASE keep this going, this is amazing, this is what we all have been hoping for... Seriously, thank you for targeting this market demographic and making a massive amount of consumers very happy.
I am a full supporter of the new Radio 94.7! Thank you!
YES! Had a buddy tell me about "the new rock station" and was SO stoked it's an alternative station. THANK YOU
First time in years that I have found a radio station that I can listen to continuously. No stoopid DJ's, a variety of current and classic alternative and pop music. Hope you don't change it...but I imagine it's only a matter of time til it becomes some corporate BS. Until then, I dig it!
It wasn't right to take alternative away!! Soo glad it's back!!!
Been missing alternative since KWOD changed to it's awful 90's format. So great to have alternative back in Sac. Hope it sticks!
This is awful! Where do I go now to get my smooth jazz on?
I can imagine that some people are happy with your switch. I, for one, am not! And a lot of my friends feel the same. The smooth jazz format was so great, a break from all the rock, etc, you can find anywhere on the dial. I played your old station all day at my studio/gallery and customers used to comment on it all the time. I live and work in the foothills, so we have less choice on stations that we can receive. That's why I miss Smooth Jazz so much. There really isn't any other choice that we can get. Please consider going back. Who the heck needs all that alternative stuff when they can get that on their computers? For easy listening, your old format was the Best! And now, Nothing....Sincerely, Carol
Another good station bites the dust. How ever now with "Alternative" we can blame the station for one more reason for road rage. Nothing calming about this. Wind them up be agressive. Less pleasant more irritation. And you call this a good idea? Not by me NO THANKS.
Why did you change formats??? I listened to Smooth Jazz for years - day and night. Purchased products from sponsors - isn't that what radio is about? There is no decent station in Sacramento to listen to now. I am very disappointed and will not listen to 94.7 ever again along with the last count of friends and family - over 120! Not a good idea! Better check with your sponsors...
Why did you get rid of the smooth jazz and even better was the Soundscapes program on the weekends. Those programs will be sorely missed. I was upset at first when you started to play a lot of the non-jazz type mainstream music but I put up with it. But now, your station is utter garbage like everything else in the area. You have lost one loyal listener for good. Looks like now I'll have to pack around an MP3 player with jazz music from now on.
KWOD was the best station Sacramento had. But now 94.7 has filled the gap that KWOD left. How about more new alternative music, and a little more punk?
FINALLY a station that doesn't play Pink, Taylor Swift, etc every five minutes. Moving here from Portland three years ago, our family has been in music limbo with no form of cool, up-to-date, current music. Your sister channel in Portland was our favorite and we are really excited to finally see Sacramento join the 21st century--there is life outside the top 40 and music from 20 years ago.
Rock On!
The NEW 94.7 IS THE BEST!!!!! THANK YOU ~ THANK YOU ~ THANK YOU!!!! When 106.5 went DORKY I was devastated and found NOTHING on the radio that I even liked a little. THIS NEW STATION has REVIVED my spirit. I love this music. It's even WAY BETTER thank 106.5 WAS! ... The variety is AWESOME ~ and we, desperately, NEEDED IT back on the radio. GOOD DECISION, guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a disappointment! 94.7 was the only choice for those of us who didn't want a continual dose of news, sports, weather, political rehash, rap, generalized crap referred to as popular or sounds geared to the ears of children. Please bring back the real music. We can listen to this garbage on any station on the dial. Is country the only refuge? barb kennedy
94.7 played the same songs all day long. They really need to know jazz in order to play jazz. Sacramento has some of the worse radio stations i have ever listened to.
I empathize with the smooth Jazz fans. They probably feel the way I did when KWOD changed formats. (Just FYI, there is no similarity between top 40/rap and alt rock. It's like saying blues and folk are the same thing.) I just found out about the KSSJ switch BECAUSE I HAVEN'T LISTEND TO THE RADIO SINCE KWOD CHANGED. I am thrilled to have a station I can listen to when I don't have my MP3 or discs with me. Little Wayne? Lady GaGa? Ke$ha? (The dollar sign is not a typo.) No thank you.
Alternative: welcome back to Sacramento!
So there are people who love alternative rock, and there are people who love smooth jazz and programs like "Soundscapes". Sacramento is a big city, which could easily support both. If I was a manager of one of the many top 40s stations in this town, I would take advantage of this gap and move to the format that KSSJ used to have, because I liked it, and because it would would fill a lucrative niche market and not have to compete against all those top 40s stations who broadcast the same stuff. Usually, advertising makes more money than payola, as far as I know, and there must be a lot of payola in the top 40s. It's hard to believe that the audience is really asking for those songs.
I to was a big fan of kwod. I am so glad to have an alt.rock station in sac. 1 of the things that made kwod so good was all the new music they broke out.people who lsten to alt music tend be Alternative, so don't be afraid to step out of the box.there are plenty of classic rock stations, please don't fall into that rut. Speaking of , where is Middle Class Rut these days? Not sure wut demo u are going for, but I am 42, gainfully employed, have 3 kids. And we Consume! Hope I can help u stay on air
94.7 Kssj had the best music in Sactown I wont to
know if smooth jazz is comeing back to Sacraminto
California beacouce smooth jazz radio was something we all need.I for one was a listener
with 94.7 Kssj for a long time now and kssj filled
a void in me your programing of smooth jazz was really good in my home town of Sacraminto,CA can you pleace bring back the old 94.7 kssj smooth jazz radio to SACTOWN,CA I realy miss the soundscapes aswell thank you sincerely Seth.
I was a fan of KWOD, only because there was nothing else comparable in the area. It is nice to see that alternative rock did not die. I love, too, that 94.7 plays "B sides," which KWOD would never do. I also like that it plays a good mixture of old alternative (i.e. 90's Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc.) but also more recent stuff as well as new music that has just come out. I haven't switched my radio to another channel since a friend turned me on to 94.7 and I won't unless there is another change made to the music content. Also, since learning of 94.7 I have purchased a ton of new music that I wasn't even aware existed. Great job!
