First Listen: KKSF (103.7 The Band) San Francisco

Written May. 18, 2009 by Sean Ross in Terrestrial Radio with 62 Comments

Classic Hits/Classic Rock should be easy in a market with the rich musical history of San Francisco, right? But it wasn't that for any of the recent Classic Hits incarnations of KFRC-FM. Or for the Bob-and-Jack-like (but older skewing) Max 95.7. And any new entrant finds themselves flanked by Cumulus' KSAN (the Bone) and sister KFOG, a Triple-A station, but one of the few that is willing to play "Sweet Home Alabama."

There's a vaguely Triple-A feel to "103.7, the Band," the station which replaced longtime Smooth Jazz outlet KKSF tonight. A stager promises "songs that made you love music in the first place." The Website declares that "103.7 The Band has been designed around the rich heritage of the San Francisco music scene. A time and place where music was filled with passion and reflected the ideals of a generation.

Musically, however, it's much more of a nuts-and-bolts Classic Rocker -- very focused, at least until the end of this 75-minute stretch, on 1972-77. (Only the overall era suggests that the station might also, like the old KFRC, be trying to fill the Oldies/Greatest Hits hole as well.) Here's what the Band played between 7:10 and 8:25 p.m. tonight:

David Essex, "Rock On"
Styx, "Come Sail Away"
Eagles, "Already Gone"
ELO, "Fire On High"
Hollies, "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress"
Boston, "Peace Of Mind"
Fleetwood Mac, "Rihannon"
Toto, "Hold The Line"
Simple Minds, "Don't You (Forget About Me)"
Led Zeppelin, "Stairway To Heaven"
Steve Miller Band, "Take The Money And Run"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, "Don't Do Me Like That"
Doobie Brothers, "Without You"
Elton John, "Your Song"
Meatloaf, "Paradise By The Dashboard Light"
Neil Young & Crazy Horse, "Cinnamon Girl"
Bon Jovi, "You Give Love A Bad Name"
Mamas & the Papas, "California Dreaming"
Van Morrison, "Brown Eyed Girl"

It was more than disappointing to say the least. And what was more telling was the comment that the decision was "business..." I don't remember the station even mentioning changing it's format from listening. At least KCBS and KFRC constantly had radio spots saying that KFRC was changing its formats. You think I'm going to listen to "the band"?!!! You gotta be kidding.

2  Rich olmstead on May 19, 2009 3:24 AM

I thought my radio was broken. Over and over I pressed the KKSF button on my radio, and kept hearing music that I can hear so many other places on the dial (ones not programed on my dial).

3  Al Hayes on May 19, 2009 1:59 PM

This is very bad.
First Chrysler, now KKSF, Smooth Jazz.....when will it end!

4  Dianna on May 19, 2009 3:52 PM

I LOVED IT. The smooth jazz was getting old only because they played the same stuff all the time. I was very pleasantly surprized to hear really good music on my way home last nite and again this morning. Things I had not heard for a long time.

5  Jack Sparks on May 19, 2009 4:45 PM

I too was surprised to find what I thought was a jazz station playing "Desperado" when I pushed the button but then I found that, in the dead of night, KKSF had morphed into another "jack" radio station.
I, for one, am glad; the Bone and KFOG often leave me wanting or retreating to my plugged-in (to my car radio) ipod. I hope this one lasts a while.

6  san francisco girl on May 19, 2009 6:32 PM

this is the best station on the radio! don't hire any dj's because they tend to ruin everything. please put jeff buckley on rotation and you'll really rule!

7  don surath on May 19, 2009 7:51 PM

I worked at KKSF when it was great. The past few years of watered down mush deserved to be killed off.
Steve Feinstein, the guy who helped found the format predicted this day would come when radio conglomerates took over the station. Look for smooth jazz on Pandora. There is no longer a place for it on FM radio.

8  JAZZMAN on May 19, 2009 9:13 PM

WHY DIDN'T KKSF ASK FOR HELP.

NOW, I WILL SPEND MORE THAN $50/MO ON CD'S.

I OUTGREW 'THE BAND' AGENDA IN THE 60'S/70'S
WHEN WE WERE TO WASTED TO CARE.

CORPORATED GREED TAKES ANOTHER STEP FORWARD.

9  Mark Roberts on May 19, 2009 10:01 PM

Yes, that playlist REALLY displays the "rich heritage of the San Francisco music scene". How many Bay Area artists do I count in Sean's list? "California Dreamin'" doesn't count -- wrong side of the state.

My sarcasm has a purpose. Lying to your listeners shows contempt for them. If you can't back up your slogan, don't use it as a liner. Now, more than ever, people can tell when you're being authentic -- and they can tell when you're being contemptuous of them. Everyone knows the old PD tricks by now. Back up what you say -- or come up with something better!

10  Spa Girl Liane on May 20, 2009 8:00 AM

OMG...what happened? I tried to find Kenny G and found Robert Plant instead! I kept hitting the button as I drove and said...what in the world is going on? In the stressed world I live in (and yes, relaxing other people for a living is really stressful) the smooth Jazz sounds of KKSF helped me relax and unwind. Why didn't they say something? 11  Ken W. on May 20, 2009 1:24 PM

The BAND is great ! I listened to jazz every night
and that's how I found the Band. I now
keep it 103.7 all the time .
Good Job

12  Shir Luk on May 20, 2009 1:52 PM

First it was the loss of Max 95.7 and now KKSF. Help me understand how another carbon copy rock station can be profitable and a unique station like 103.7 isn't. Just another bad business decision by some vice president who will move-on in two years anyway.

13  Thomas Hull on May 20, 2009 1:57 PM

Its ridiculous to change this stations format. Smooth Jazz has such a strong following and loyal listeners. KKSF has been so much a part of SF and Aids support and to go the way of Oldies.....It sucks....I have no need for a new rock station so I now have an empty button on my radio dial. I've been a loyal listener since about 1989. I still remember many of the original DJ's. God bless Steve Feinstein and the great radio station he helped make for as many years as we got to enjoy... Fortunately I've got my ipod full of good smooth jazz hits. Now I can only hope that this stupid experiment fails.......

14  jeff h on May 20, 2009 2:08 PM

Same ol' same ol' programmed by the same idiots who think they know music. It's just over-played hit songs ad naseum. I mean, how many times can I hear Daniel by Elton John anyway? Why can't they give the majority of these songs a rest? What some station should do is play more obscure album cuts and early r&b with a taste of country thrown in, along with a dash of early punk rock and forget playing Schmotel California. Enough already! Don't let them ram this burned-out music down our throats. Help is on the way. Use your i-pod and you be your own music programmer!

15  Bongwater on May 20, 2009 2:30 PM

This sounds like the "all-purpose" Clear Channel radio format, the same one they repeat in most every other market. Just stick a fancy new name on it and just throw it out there and assume the general radio listener will presume it's something "new" Right?

You can only get away with that for so long.....

Is this the BEST Clear Channel can do anymore? No wonder they're bankrupt.....

16  Dawn on May 20, 2009 3:49 PM

I listened to KKSF off and on for years and even though I am surprised that it is gone, I wasn't listening to it very much anymore. In fact, I can't stand listening to the music stations in general because they play the same songs over and over again AND I just don't like the music that is on the radio very much. I listen to Pandora which streams a plethera of music that I want to hear....without commercials.

When I found The Band today I was taken back to the 70's and absolutely love the music. It is the first time I could keep one station on and not hear the same songs being played (they are playing 10K non stop). I grew up in Cleveland Ohio, the birth place of rock so I grew up listening to the same music that 103.7 is now playing. Cleveland has NEVER lost it's rock roots and has been playing great rock songs since the 60's. It is about time S.F., with it's own history of rock has a station dedicated to this era as well. ROCK ON!

17  zangief on May 20, 2009 10:09 PM

this is bulls**t! bulls**t bulls**t bulls**t! kksf was the only jazz station! now where do we listen to jazz! 98.1 is awsome but it was'nt kksf 103.7, that was unique.. they had covers of songs, where else do you hear covers of songs like jazz versions of santana.. that shows talent and creativity.. i can listen to music from "the band" pretty much anywhere else.. the band SUCKS! i say we protest try and find a way to stop this madness and bring back kksf 103.7. i am VERY VERY dissapointed.. they took a piece of history away from us. i can keep going on with this, i must find a way to bring back kksf.. we dont want something "NEW" thats why we were listining to the same station! jazz! with out it im not relaxed.. that was the smoothest most relaxing station ever. now im all unpatient and stressing all the time.. couldnt they take over a country station! theres a s**t load of those!

18  Tony on May 20, 2009 10:37 PM

A-frickin-mazing!!! I have a new favorite station. I have not stopped singing since I turned the station on. I have been going back with every song remembering where I was when I first heard it and what I was doing. AND - as a "AARP" member it has been a long time since I have tried to see how loud my radio will go. ROCK ON guys!!!!
Thanks and I wish you a VERY long run.

19  Dana on May 21, 2009 11:12 AM

This station is fantastic! It is great to finally find a station that plays rock "n" roll that is from the 70's and 80's!! Keep it going!!!

20  dan on May 21, 2009 12:03 PM

where can i find another jazz station?

21  Cheryl on May 21, 2009 12:40 PM

I learned that KKSF was changing its format through an e-mail message sent out on its last day of the smooth jazz format. I love smooth jazz, but listened to KKSF infrequently, since they played the same tired songs over and over again. Rarely anything new! I was teasing friends in Atlanta and Philadelphia about them losing their smooth jazz station, and low and behold the same thing happens in San Francisco! I will listen to my CD's, smooth jazz on my IPOD, or KBLX. I will NOT listen to the corny new replacement called The Band. Do you think someone could have told the listeners in advance the format was changing????????

22  Dan on May 21, 2009 1:18 PM

At first I was very disapointed to get rock on my only non rock station, but kksf was not as good as it used to be before they added all the r&b to it. I hope you keep it just they way it is with the DJs.

23  Beth on May 21, 2009 1:19 PM

KKSF is gone and so that's it. 23 Years listening to a station that was an oasis from all the others. The only stations left for me are KFOG, Classic and NPR. Clear Channel has systematically ruined one station after another leaving a pablum of mediocre middle-of-the-road not-worth-the-time insulting-to-the-mind "music" that I've heard tens of thousands of times and don't want to EVER hear again. I'd rather have silence. I can't wait for Clear Channel to be GONE, mercifully gone.

24  AGL on May 21, 2009 1:29 PM

Unbelievable and I could not be more disappointed!! I have been a loyal listener to the smooth jazz of KKSF since the 80’s. And when I moved deep into the south bay 5 years ago I can’t tell you what lengths I had to go to, to ensure my radio received a signal but it was all worth it to me. My morning alarm has been set to that station for so many years I was surprised to find on Monday that it wasn’t frozen in place. Because it took me about that long to change the dial..!

But alas, there is not another soft easy sounding station to be found on FM. I can assure you though that “the BAND” will NOT be my new music. Sure I’m an old rocker myself as well from the 70’s but for crying out loud grow up people…! When I’m feeling nostalgic and want to hear old rock I just put an album on. Why do I want reminders of my life 30 years ago put into rotation…?

And I am fairly confident they aren’t winning over any “new” listeners. I know because I have been progressive myself and listen to what the younger gen’s are listening to today (rap NOT included). Just as our generation in the 60’s and 70’s didn’t listen to the funky old stuff our parents listened to either...

Dumb move whoever you are. You killed a bay area icon of radio. The only smooth jazz station around. And screw you for even doing so without even so much as an announcement before hand, if only out of respect to the loyal listeners of the former KKSF. Yeah yeah, sure sure…, “it’s not personal it’s business”… Well I’ve got news for you corp. exec., radio IS personal…. Thanks for nothing and GOOD BYE....!

25  Tracy on May 21, 2009 4:21 PM

I can't believe KKSF is gone either but if you want real jazz, not smooth jazz, listen to 91.1. It's better than the band.

26  Deb on May 21, 2009 8:53 PM

If the smooth jazz format why so bad for over the air broadcast, why is it OK on the internet? I've listened to lots of internet smooth jazz and I liked our station best. Ha, I listen to NPR, too. NPR, Wild, Star, and KKSF but not anymore. Watercolors XM 71 for me, but no local traffic reports. ;-(

27  T. Traver on May 21, 2009 10:30 PM

With Ultra right wing Clear Channel owning the station it is no wonder they have changed formate. I expect to hear someone like Savage on the station in the near future.

28  Monica S. on May 22, 2009 12:48 PM

I was so supprised when I hit the button for washed up jazz and had Bono singing back to me. He was followed by Van Morrison and a whole stream of the most excellent artist. I cranked up the car radio and rolled down the windows and sang at the top of my range. Thank you for replacing what had become elevator music to the best music with no interuptions. ps can we stream this station?

29  Deborah on May 22, 2009 1:19 PM

I traveled out of state for a few days to come home and find my favorite radio station GONE! Like Rick O., over and over I pressed the KKSF button on my radio only to hear carbon-copy music that I can listen to on so many other stations - HATE IT!

30  Bill C. on May 22, 2009 2:59 PM

KKSF was playing tired s.o.s. over and over, how many times can you listen to kenny g, dave koz, david sanborn, chris botti, it's a good break from that and if you want REAL JAZZ, listen to 91.1 and you'll be happy, but I think the BAND is outstanding and you will have alot of new listeners, if only by accident! AWESOME. THANX!!

31  Bob G on May 22, 2009 5:04 PM

Not sure if this will sustain 20 plus years like KKSF did. Forget the nonstop commercial 10,000 songs just to hook listeners, "the Band" should have arrived with its own personality other than a hard disk playlist of music we all have in our players. It will be interesting how it will compares to stations like KFOX or the Sacto's area KSEG 96.9 and KKHK 104.1. IF you are going to put big bucks in a "new classic rock 60 70s station" then try emulating the old KSAN of old if you want the 40-65+ age grop.

32  John on May 22, 2009 5:56 PM

I'm trying to get KSSJ, a smooth jazz station over in Sacramento 94.7, I believe, "the wave" to boost their signal, they are working on a way to get smooth jazz back to the Bay Area. They told me that there are number FCC compliance issues that dictate how strong a signal and what area they are allowed to cover. Meanwhile, 91.1 for now.

33  joan on May 22, 2009 10:10 PM

even though kksf sucked in the later years- it was one of my favorite stations to listen to. i especially liked sunday mornings-now i'll be listening to 91.1, and my ipod- i will NOT BE LISTENING TO THE BAND-give me a break from all those tired rock songs- i can hear them in my sleep-how about some world music for a change--jeez

34  C C Matthews on May 23, 2009 1:01 AM

I love 103-7 The Band. I love everything about it. Both Music and Imaging. The music does feel like back in the the day, growin up around the bay area. This is what KFRC fm should of been.
CBS's loss will be Clear Channel's gain.

35  SilverUnicorn on May 23, 2009 10:08 AM

I *LOVE* the new format! There hasn't been a station as good as this since KBGG got the big kiss off! I hope this one stays around longer!

36  chris on May 23, 2009 12:57 PM

FInally, a fantastic radio station in the Bay Area! These songs are incredible and you can't hear them on any other stations like you are playing. Love the lack of DJ's and 'talk' Keep it up!

37  Dave O. on May 23, 2009 9:11 PM

I was instantly hooked. This station is bringing me back to my roots. Thank you.

38  Isabel on May 23, 2009 10:03 PM

I have to laugh. I did the same thing so many others did...I kept pushing the button thinking I had pushed the wrong one.

I like the classic rock, but I REALLY MISS my Smooth Jazz.

The worst part is the fact that it was done WITHOUT WARNING.

I'm very disappointed.

39  Treva on May 24, 2009 2:07 AM

I was really bummed out when I got in my car and popped on my all time favorite radio station to find it is now playing what most other staions play. KKSF was my saving grace, my place to unwind and relax. I was a loyal listener for 20 years and now it is gone! I discovered my favorite music by tuning in to this station back in 1989. As someone who used to suffer from panick attacks and anxiety, KKSF radio was the only station I could listen to that would calm me down or help me drift off to sleep when I was frazzled. Thank you for saving my life. You will be missed so very much.

40  Charlotte Gracer on May 25, 2009 1:56 PM

I do not like smooth jazz but it was great for putting the kids to sleep at naptime. I do however like The Band, and The Bone and KFOG.

41  Selene on May 25, 2009 6:05 PM

I really miss KKSF. It was the only station I listened to. What a huge step backward to hear James Taylor and other milquetoast tunes where the modern smooth jazz one was. Who killed KKSF? What a mistake. I will never listen to 103.7 again.

42  Greg Mackey on May 26, 2009 3:09 PM

I am very dissapointed. I can't stand the format of the Band. In my opinion management has made a fatal mistake. I'm deleting 103.7 from my programing.

43  SFjazzman on May 26, 2009 6:22 PM

As a long time listener of KKSF, I wasn't too disappointed with the sudden change. However KKSF's move to the rock format--already covered in the bay area market very well...is mind numbing. Bay Area listeners that really want their rock the way it was in the 70's while also getting a dose of current rock with “REAL LOCAL DJ's” (intelligent personalities) will tune to KFOG 104.5. Instead of the canned automated juke-box-junk on KKSF now, I grew up on rock and enjoy it most of the time when I am working, but like my age my taste in music has grown... and I enjoy jazz as well,... but quite frankly KKSF wasn't really a jazz station, It had become a snooze pseudo-jass station. Playing Sade every hour followed by Michael MacDonald... is not Jazz kids...! I believe most listeners would have preferred KKSF programmed more jazz, and bebop... less schmooze and pop.. I give KKSF a year before the next format is change is silent....

44  Betty McMcdade on May 27, 2009 1:37 AM

i'm very sorry to see my favorite station discontinued. Poor judgement on management. It sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

45  Purvesh Khona on May 28, 2009 7:06 PM

Wow!! My experience resonates with most here. I thought something was wrong with the radio and I kept on pushing my preset again and again!

For 13 years I listened to that station, it became part of my routine when I would drive and used to love the format.

KKSF should have asked for listeners help if they really were in such quandary financially.

I simply will miss the format. I feel we have lost a bit of San Francisco with demise of smooth jazz. It made city rich.

103.7 is going off my preset list forever!!! Very disappointing.!!

46  Fxhomie on May 31, 2009 1:23 AM

I never listened to KKSF - smooth jazz did nothing for me. I'm glad a classic hits station is now on the dial. The Band strikes a resonant chord with me, as I grew up with these songs, and still enjoy the melodies and musicmanship.

47  Becky Bravo on May 31, 2009 5:40 PM

I HATE to new "Band"!!! Does anyone know of any other station that plays similar type of jazz that the the old kksf did?

48  Karen Tafoya on June 2, 2009 11:17 AM

I LOVE the new Band radio station!!! Great music...takes me to "back in the days"!! I'm also loving the "10,000 songs in a row.." with NO flippin comercials!

KEEP THE MUSIC COMIN!!

Oh...& btw...never mind the haters...if they don't like the tunes...they don't have to be here...hear?!

YEAH...KEEP THOSE TUNES COMING!!!!!!!!

49  Kristy on June 3, 2009 4:20 AM

I've listened to KKSF for over 20 years and welcomed it's gradual transition to Smooth Jazz. I'd listen late Sunday nights when they pulled out the the smokey Brazilian Sambas and later, the Jazz Cafe with the true classic jazz. I first heard Mark Isham (My Wife's Champagne Shoulders), Pat Matheny and Boney James on KKSF. And on Sunday mornings there were hours of mellow, sometimes ethereal pieces for taking it slow and really, REALLY relaxing. I have to admit, though, that KKSF developed a rather automated feel over the past few years. So I wasn't surprised at the recent change. Still, I'm deeply annoyed that corporate radio (priority: makjing $$$) chose not to venture into updating the station for the many, many of us in the Bay Area who are grown ups with good taste, an ear for contemporary classics and a desire to listen to something other than what we listened to in high school and college. For crying out loud, we aren't nimnulls clinging to the past.

50  edmond knight on June 5, 2009 2:13 AM

where do I find jazz comparable to103.7. provided great jazz.will there be other stations like 103.7.Is their another jazz station besides 91.1?where do I here david benoit, kenny g and four play?

51  TC on June 8, 2009 2:12 AM

I was so sick of the same "jazz" music played over and over and over and over and over. I finally stopped listening...for years. Then went back to still find them playing THE SAME SONGS! (artists typically create ALBUMS with multiple songs...but the station never got that). I am happy to listen to "the band"...brings back the days when I actually thought I'd be up there playing to the fans. Sure, this could get old, too. But for now I'll take it over the repetitive JAZZ format.

52  Janet on June 9, 2009 6:36 PM

LOVE it. Keep the DJ's away. Keep the music coming. It reminds me of MAX. Yea!!!!

53  Dook Willard on June 25, 2009 3:42 PM

Wait For KKSF 103.7 to become KSFO 103.7 in the future but with More republican Propaganda. I listen to KFOG and the Bone great stations. I loved Smooth Jazz too on KKSF also. But this is just a temporary format until Sarah Palin, Michael Steele and Dick Cheney start to have talk shows on KSFO 103.7. Look at Clear Channel's most favorite product RNC Tald Radio.

54  Deanne on July 14, 2009 10:54 AM

Where else can you hear Freebird on the way to work? Sweet!

55  Darryl on July 19, 2009 3:31 PM

Love the new format!! A bit like Chicago's "The Drive". All of the great tunes I grew up with plus some "album" tracks I haven't heard for awhile. Hate sleepy "fake" jazz, anyway! Good riddance!

56  Bryan on July 22, 2009 12:34 PM

KKSF was awesome - from it's beginning in the late 80's up through the late 90's, especially since it played alot of New Age. (Although I remember some disappointment when a DJ rejected my request for "Running" by Earth Wind and Fire). Somewhere along the way I thought it lost some of its brilliance and started tuning out around 2001. At least we had the Quiet Storm KBLX as a backup, but that station also changed recently and leaves me wanting now.

However, I think the new format is quite refreshing especially since there are so few commercials, and KFOG and the Bone are too eclectic sometimes. Now if you throw in a few more 80's bands I'll be a really devoted listener.

Besides, I think after 20 years I have enough CD's with Windham Hill, Keiko Matsui, Earl Klugh, and David Sanborn.

57  stephanie on August 7, 2009 10:49 AM

It's about friggin time. I hope this last forever. I LOVE THE BAND!!!

58  Metalman on September 7, 2009 10:01 PM

I Love Led Zeppelin But if hear a radio play Stairway to heaven on more time... How about Achilles Heal? I mean Zep had more than one great song and yet radio stations would have us believe they were a one hit wonder. Why dont I get a greatest rock hits of the 70s from K-tel? We already have a watered down station called KOIT. we are supposed to be in SF with all the snobbery of not buying the hype from the man. you should call your station "The Man" instead of the band.

59  Metalman on September 13, 2009 3:57 PM

Correction: "Achilles last stand" not heal(and that should have been spelled heel) one thing could make the station shine, Listener and DJ playlist. Radio is on the way of the newspaper due to computers, Ipods, paid subscriptions to sirius, Coporation management, and the FCC. Why cant management see this, and allow a radio station to think outside of the box for listener appreciation? I say no more white bread!

60  Chris K. on September 13, 2009 4:06 PM

The Band is pretty crappy in my opinion. It's a very small selection of the music from that time, and the announcements are abnoxious to say the least. If you're going to do a classic rock, station at least do it right. I understand that the station didn't have enough money, but they could have made a better choice of how to act. As a result, I no longer listen to ANY Clear Channel radio stations, with the exception of KYOT.

61  Larry on November 29, 2009 1:36 AM

Finally! A 60's station that is cool enough to have a Program Director, or some way to not play the same song out of only forty or so, at the same time every day, so monotonus you can set your watch by it. I'm so sick of the same repetitive lack luster programming that is out there. Thanks for a welcome relief from all the drecky programming. I listened for three days and heard only my favorites, including some I haven't heard for thirty or forty years! And NO REPEATS!! I love you guys! Keep the faith! Rock on! You're awesome. Got any "Flamin Groovies" cuts? Other obscure stuff?

62  Butch Furtado on February 8, 2010 2:21 PM

I used to listen to KKSF all the time. But now with the new "oldies" format this station stinks! I have deleted it from my stereo memory and I will NEVER listen to the band!
