HD Radio: Mend it, or End it?

Written Apr. 21, 2008 by Tom Webster in HD Radio with 3 Comments

That's the question I posed as moderator of a panel on HD Radio at the recent Radio and Internet Newsletter (RAIN) Summit in Las Vegas. The panelists, which included John Gehron, Dan Halyburton, SOMA FM's Rusty Hodge, Ibiquity's Don Kelly and Jeff Vidler from Solutions Research, seemed to come to a unanimous "mend it" decision--but you can judge for yourself here, by watching the video.

Interesting discussion, but no real surprises. Life is rosy for iBiquity. Radio thinks it might work and have spent millions on marketing...blah, blah, blah. Who will step up with real content? Who will step up and market it beyond the radio dial? In short, who will create interest?

Thanks for continuing to ask, now someone needs to really answer. (Perhaps a business model would be a good start.)

It was a fun panel, but in retrospect, I didn't speak my gut on that last question. I blogged a followup here.

Phil: Bingo on the marketing--the failure to budge the awareness number is as much a function of only marketing HD over broadcast radio as it is inherent flaws with the model or messaging.

Rusty: I suspect you may not have been the only one.
