Where Is Commercial Radio Actually Growing?

Written Mar. 4, 2008 by Larry Rosin in Content + Terrestrial Radio with 3 Comments

Amidst the various gloomy reports in America's radio trade press, I was interested to find this report from the U.K. Commercial radio in the UK actually grew 7.1% in the fourth quarter of last year - and the industry grew as a whole for the year.

Of course, commercial radio is a far younger industry in the U.K., which helps it. But what stands out is the last paragraph where one sees the impact of coordinated efforts by Commercial Radio's representative agencies. Surely there is a lesson for U.S. radio in that.

This makes sense. I mean as far as alternative radio, XFM in the UK rules! XFM gives american bands more support than most station in america! Thank god for the internet... radio in america is.. well i have my ipod. enough said. Indie 103 and KCRW are the exceptions to the rule though.

Brit Radio growing? Have you heard Brit Radio lately? They have local, 24-hour live programming. US Radio grew when we had that. Content.

Listen to the BBC's news station London Live; it's local, hip, smart, fun and informative. It could be done commercial here in the US and it would kick ass in a big market!
