Music Licensing Plumbs Orwellian Depths

The UK's Performing Rights Society is suing Scotland's Kwik-Fit auto repair chain for over 200,000 pounds because Kwik-Fit's customers might overhear its employees' radios. Because this generates more performances of copyright protected music, the PRS wants its "fair" share.
The most disturbing part of this story? Kwik-Fit founder Sir Tom Farmer, contesting the action, issued a statement noting that Kwik Fit has a 10-year policy banning the use of personal radios in the workplace. Thanks to the Performing Rights Society, it's hard to argue with that policy.
