First Listen: "Philly's 106.1"

Written Aug. 10, 2006 by Sean Ross in Content + Terrestrial Radio with 109 Comments

As expected, soft AC WSNI (Sunny 104.5) and WJJZ (Smooth Jazz 106.1) Philadelphia both went away at Noon today, replaced by a shadowcast of a new rhythmic AC format that will eventually take up permanent residence at 106.1 with the syndicated Whoopi Goldberg in the morning.

The speculation was that the new station, now called Philly's 106.1, would be similar to KQMV (Movin' 92.5) Seattle. But it's older and more AC-flavored than Movin' with some pure pop records (KT Tunstall, James Blunt, Daniel Powter), some '60s Motown, and more '70s disco than Movin' 92.5 would play. There's also less of the late '80s/early '90s rhythmic pop than KQMV has used, although the station does get as recent/edgy as Nina Sky's "Move Ya Body." That actually led one industry observer to suggest that the most accurate comparison was to Clear Channel sister KBIG Los Angeles.

Here's today's 2 p.m. hour of Philly's 106.1:

Abba, "Dancing Queen"
Nelly Furtado, "I'm Like A Bird"
DHT, "Listen To Your Heart"
Barry White, "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby"
Frankie Smith, "Double Dutch Bus"
Temptations, "The Way You Do The Things You Do"
Cher, "Song For The Lonely"
Chic, "Good Times"
Technotronic, "Pump Up The Jam"
Madonna, "Borderline"
Will Smith, "Switch"
Gloria Gaynor, "I Will Survive"

I will REALLY miss the smooth jazz of jjz.

2  Lorenzo on August 14, 2006 9:25 AM

I also MISS smooth jazz WJJZ! There was no other station like it. Now there is a void. I hope they come back soon!

3  vera on August 14, 2006 9:29 AM

I think it's wonderful. Keep up the good music.
And Whoopi is the greatest. Now what happen to 104.5 Tesh in the morning. Is he no longer going to be on or is it only temperary. Tesh was very educational and helpful.

Ultimately, this is just another format that will have a shelf life of 3, 5, or 7 years and be gone. To succeed in the long run, programmers and those who support them will have to let go of the reigns! As we move forward and HD takes hold, the control, just like an iPod, will need to be put in the end users hands. Programmers might still have what is loosely termed a format, but songs will need to be chosen by the listener. This might be by voting for one of two or three songs coming up, or simply by building a play list off of your favorite digital server (radio station) before you drive to work. The difference between an iPod and this new digital music server broadcast in HD, will still be local content. A DJ, traffic, news, and weather. This is not really letting go; it is just getting up to speed in the age of consumer-controlled content.

I am a seventeen year old listener of WJJZ 106.1. Even thogh I am only seventeen smooth jazz became my favorite music to listen to. WJJZ was the only station where I could listen to smooth jazz artists like Walter Beasley, Paul Hardcastle, Najee and many more that cannot be heard on any other station. There are numerous other stations that play hip-hop,rock, and other uptempo music, but why take off a station that mixed great vocalists like Luther Vandross and awesome musicians like Kenny G all into one station.Having smooth jazz on the radio gave listeners a different type of music to listen to. Thank you for reading my email.

I've been listening to 106.1 since the changover, and I have to say...it's not bad. However, I also miss the smooth jazz of WJJZ. There's no place else on the Philadelphia FM Dial to listen to relaxing background music, like WJJZ provided. There's now a void where (mostly) instrumental music could be found. This kind of decision is just going to drive more people to Internet Streaming Audio or Satellite Radio. Free radio is going to be a wasteland of Pop and Rap...and commercials.

7  Lin on August 15, 2006 12:24 PM

I don't like the new format. Bring back the smooth jazz!!

8  dianemilgrom on August 16, 2006 8:48 AM

I will really miss the smooth jazz. Please bring
it back soon!

9  Dave on August 17, 2006 1:29 AM

What a sad day for jazz lovers in the Philadelphia area. Hard for me to understand why a sophisticated and truly unique blend of instrumental music would be traded in for a "me too" brand of rhythmic AC. Now 106.1 is just another station on the Philly dial.

10  Tara McNair on August 17, 2006 1:13 PM

I sonnot like the new format at all and I am exprememly diappointed that WJJZ is no longer Philly's smooth jass station.
I listen to a variety of stations but when all else failed I could alway, always count on WJJZ smooth jazz 106.1 to be right on point.
A lot of us will miss you!!!

11  Jennifer on August 17, 2006 7:10 PM

Please bring back the jazz!!!!

12  Vicki Wurster on August 17, 2006 7:54 PM

Well - that did it. They took the two best radio stations in Philadelphia and threw them in the trash. What are we going to do this Christmas when there is no Sunny 104 to play Christmas songs?
So - screw the new management. I went out and bought a hi-def radio - WJJZ and the Sunlight Lounge are still available in hi-def and I don't have to listen to hip hop or Whoopi Goldberg ever again. So long, commercial radio.

13  BRD on August 18, 2006 9:12 AM

I am highly upset that WJJZ is no longer with us. Please bring back this wonderful Jazz station!

14  Ingrid on August 18, 2006 3:34 PM

Finally a GOOD Radio Station in Philly!!
So far I love it and Whoopie is making me lsiten to morning radio again.
Keep it up!

15  Ing on August 18, 2006 3:36 PM

So sad! No more elevator Jazz and 3 month long 24hour bad Christmas music. Can Philly handle it??

16  Albert on August 19, 2006 7:19 PM

I am so upset that you guys changed your music format, the jazz was the best thing ever, I can't listen to anything else, & am very upset, & got really used to 106.1 as a rule, please bring it back, a.s.a.p. We have all family members listening as well, we are not very happy about your recent change.
Thank you very much.

17  Ronnie on August 20, 2006 10:04 AM

After your kids take you through "their" music, it was always very relaxing and enjoyable to switch over to 106.1. Talking about a void, I can't believe it's gone away.

18  Ed on August 20, 2006 7:23 PM

I am also sad that WJJZ is gone from my car radio. Any chance of bringing this format back? I hope so.

19  Bertee on August 21, 2006 12:38 AM

I was shocked! when i turned my radio to my favorite smooth jazz station wjjz and it was not there. what a big lost to this city of ours.we all get tired of the same songs played on the radio.106.1 was something special. got us out of the norm, now its just a common radio station.what a waste! bring back the jazz!!

20  wayne conner on August 21, 2006 10:32 PM

where do we listen to smooth jazz at now

surely if you end on one station another should pick it up

21  lynn nelson on August 23, 2006 10:13 AM

WJJZ 106.1 was the only radio station that my family, friends and I ever listened to. Please bring it back.

22  Jill on August 23, 2006 10:33 AM

I hate what you did with 104.5 - now I have to find another station for my morning commute.

23  Paul on August 23, 2006 11:54 PM

How bad had the #s become for WJJZ...which for so many years was a rare success at 106.1 (the Top FM 106 anyone?) other than maybe one #1 book for
Eagle 106? (You didn't say). Time to start the
speculation of "who will change to replace the Jazz (if you want to call that Jazz)?"
I'd heard the stunting over the weekend; the sample hour you list is to me "mostly songs I'm
really tired of" but then perhaps I'm more jaded
than the typical "I miss my jazz" respondant.
Who's taking bets on how long Whoopi actually puts up with the constraints of doing live radio...and will Paul Cubby go back across the street to ask for his PMD job back when she can
take it no longer? And, didn't we already have
a variation of this format called Jammin' Oldies?
Why will "rhythmic AC" succeed where JO failed...
or will it. Great article though :)

24  Jeff M. on August 24, 2006 2:27 AM

It's been over two weeks and I still cannot believe WJJZ is gone ! I vow that I will NEVER listen to the "terrestrial radio" again if Smooth Jazz does not return to the dial in Philadelphia. And I can guarantee you I am not the only one around here who feels that way.

25  Kristen on August 24, 2006 8:39 AM

I CANNOT believe that you would take away Sunny 104.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOu had the biggest audience ever come the beginning of November when you played your 24-hour long Christmas music. It was the best ever!! I can remember listeners calling in mid-October asking when the Christmas music would start. Also, how can Whoopi be on "Philly's 106.1" doesn't she live in California. She doesn't know Philly!

26  Chris on August 24, 2006 9:07 AM

I always listened to Sunnys Christmas music and I hope that they would bring Sunny back or play the Christmas music on this new station. I am 144 years old and I still listned to unny even when they wernt playiong Christmas music. So Please BRING IT BACK!!!

27  Nancy B on August 24, 2006 10:11 AM

I heard Whoopi this morning talking about the generosity of the US government towards foreign countries when New Orleans is still suffering. Hooray Whoopi! I agree 1000%! Take care of America FIRST!

28  Barb Bordick on August 24, 2006 10:01 PM

I just could not believe what I heard when I got back from a trip....it wasn't the WJJZ I've listened to for years...I thought I had an AM station on at first. PLease Please bring back the 106.1 Smooth jazz. Nothing was more relaxing than listening to Luther, or Kenny G, Walter Beasley, after a day of hard work. I will not be a listener of the new format!

29  Lisa Marie on August 25, 2006 8:40 AM

Bring back the jazz!

30  Cheryl on August 25, 2006 10:36 AM

Most of my coworkers and friends as well as me are boycotting 106.1 now that they've removed the smooth jazz format. Virtually every other station plays what they play now so there's nothing special about them anymore. And while Whoopi may be a draw for some people, she's not enough of a draw if she's all there is. We're now listening to 92.7 smooth jazz online, which while based up in the Susquehanna Valley and apparently not easily accessible via regular radio, if at all, it does stream online so we can listen to it via computer. It fills the void of the 106.1 format very well. Try it at www.smoothjazz927.com, you'll be glad you did if you miss 106.1.

31  Wendy on August 25, 2006 11:35 AM

Cherly, I am going to try 927.
Miss smooth Jazz very much. There are many of my coworkers that feel the same way so I will pass this on to them. This new station is not for listening to in the office...

We want JAZZ and 104.5

32  Michelle on August 26, 2006 6:41 PM

I heard this radio station while I was getting my hair done and asked, what station is it? I love it!
I grew up in the seventies and have not heard these songs in years! Keep it up! Would love to hear more selections from seventies! Keep it up!

33  Gus Altieri on August 28, 2006 3:22 PM

Bring back smooth jazz. This was a great station for office music as well as the drive in my car at any time. The number could not have been bad at all.

34  latanya on August 29, 2006 9:11 AM

I am so disappointed that the only "real" jazz station in the area has been replaced by....well, you fill in your own blanks! Has the station moved? If so, where is it? This was really abrupt and unfair to all the devoted listeners WJJZ had!! Who's bright idea was this? Who wants to hear Whoopi? Where is the petition? I'd like to sign it!! When does the protest start? I'd like to march!! This was the worst move I've seen in radio in a long time!! I will NEVER EVER listen to the new format, I'll listen to silence first! (Trust me, I'm not alone in that statement) I miss you guy greatly and hope to hear you again soon. My Sunday afternoons are just not the same!! Good luck to us all!!

35  Jacqui Johnson on August 29, 2006 2:25 PM

Your radio station plays a large variety of R&B and it is so refreshing and welcome.

The commercials are minimal. Thank you!!

Keep up the good work that is missing sorely from too many black stations who enjoy hearing themselves GAB, GAB, GAB

36  Chad Tanis on August 30, 2006 1:15 PM

What a disappointment!! Really gonna miss 104.5 and 106.1. Now it is just like every other junk station.

37  sheila w on August 30, 2006 2:18 PM

How dare they take off wjjz smooth jazz . For years I've gotten up on Saturday mornings turned on my smooth jazz , and cleaned my house. I entertained company listening to smooth jazz , and some other private things too. I am very disapointed , and I will not listen to that mess that is on now

38  robert greenage on August 30, 2006 5:30 PM

It is sad that the only station that broadcast continous jazz, smooth or oterwise, is gone.I'm finished with terrestial radio. This weekend off to circuit city for a satellite radio. Ten dollars a month isn't much compared to all the useless talk and commercials you are forced to listen to on "free radio". Goodby.

39  Dee on August 30, 2006 7:24 PM

I love the format!!!!! First, this is a station to which I can relate. I am 37 and I "know" the music they are playing. Now, while I do like jazz, this new format is a great mix of different genre, and eras.

40  Cheryl on August 31, 2006 11:56 AM

I really did not like Smooth Jazz 106.1 nor WSNI 104.5; was glad to see them both go. I love the new 106.1; it is a lot like Eagle 106.1 or Electric 106.1; I hear a lot of Blondie on the station; I've won concert tickets from 104.5. I come to you from Q102

41  BARBARA on August 31, 2006 3:53 PM

I REALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY HATE THIS "NEW" 106.1
IT IS HORRIBLE.....
I MISS WJJZ.....IT WAS RELAXING.....AND VERY STRESS FREE!!!
PLEASE BRING IT BACK....
WHOOPI IS GARBAGE......

42  Nicole on August 31, 2006 5:34 PM

I think the new station is absolutely terrible. Sunny 104.5 was able to give a challenge to B101 and was successful in playing better music. Then, this change came and of course it left me with no other options than to switch back to B101 for easy listening. It is an absolute shame that a good station was destroyed.

43  shundi on August 31, 2006 7:08 PM

RE" JJZ, i will sorely miss it. Hardly any reason to turn on the radio now- accept for WXTU. Nothing like fixing something that isn't broken.

44  Lisa on September 1, 2006 6:56 PM

Can't beleive you took away sunny 104.5. It was the only station we listened to and didn't have to flip to hear great music all the time. Now we have to surf the radio stations again. What will we do at Christmas now?

45  jeanne on September 2, 2006 4:22 PM

Please bring back a smooth jazz radio station. I couldn't believe wjjz was gone when I returned from vacation. Why take away the only jazz station we have and replace it with more of the same? Philly is a Jazz Town! Put my name on the petition.

46  Kim on September 3, 2006 1:21 PM

I absolutely love this new format. Way to go. That smooth jazz was becoming old and tiresome. John Tesh & Kenny G - YUCK! It wasn't jazz. It was crap. I love the mix of music. It's exactly what I would play. I can hear disco, funk and new stuff like KT Tunstall. I've turned all my friends on to the new format. THANK YOU!!!!

47  Pam on September 4, 2006 2:48 PM

I miss my smooth jazz my husband passed away 10 months ago and this music really helped my soul. Help me find a new smooth jazz station.

48  PV on September 4, 2006 3:07 PM

WHERE DO WE GO FOR JAZZ NOW? I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST STATION. IT INTRODUCED ME TO ARTISTS SUCH AS DAVID BENOIT, RUSS FREEMAN, BONEY JAMES AND MANY OTHERS THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THE CD'S OTHERWISE. THE NEW STATIONS MUSIC CAN BE HEARD ON EVERY OTHER CHANNEL....BRING SMOOTH JAZZ BACK!

49  Bob on September 6, 2006 9:27 AM

Bring back the Jazz!!!!! I Wont listen to 106.1,ever! Aging baby boomers had one station that was cool and different. See ya 106.1.

50  Bill on September 7, 2006 8:03 AM

I can't believe one of the great music cities has no jazz station. Who was the genius who thought this up??? WJJZ smooth Jazz, I really miss ya........BRING IT BACK!!!!

51  dave on September 7, 2006 8:22 AM

The same few tunes over and over again. Whoopi has absolutely nothing to offer. Bring back jazz!

52  Rob on September 7, 2006 10:49 AM

It is very sad to here the demise of such a fine radio station like WJJZ106.1. Wdy in earth would anyone replace it with a radio station that plays the SAME stuff as everybody else? AND have another station in the area playing the same exact thing? We will miss WJZZ on our rides to the Jersey shore.

53  ANNA on September 8, 2006 8:24 AM

WHAT THE???? NO JAZZ STATION IN PHILLY??? No wonder people are switching to XM where there are Jazz stations to your liking!!! NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS AT ALL. OK Everybody, lets move!!!

54  Melana on September 8, 2006 8:34 AM

I miss WJJZ!!! Please bring it back and put Whoopi on another station... She takes too many commercial breaks that its almost pointless to have her on anyway. In a 30 minute window, she may be on the air 8 minutes. How rediculous!

55  Jazz luvr on September 8, 2006 8:36 AM

I cannot believe Smooth Jazz is off the air. It was the hit of most dinner partys we have had and social gatherings. There is no venue on the radio for relaxing great jazz music here. You people have sorely missed the boat. Who made that decision? Jazz in case you(being in the business and all)don't know, is the true American Home Grown Talent and Expression of our lives from Billie Holiday to Harry Connick Jr. Too bad you have taken that away from the Philadelphia area.

56  Ruth on September 8, 2006 1:14 PM

It is very important to keep good music in the air. Please bring the Jazz back!!!

57  Michelle on September 12, 2006 3:29 PM

I don't mind the new radio station but are they going to play Christmas music? I look forward to that every year!!

58  Tom on September 13, 2006 11:28 AM

Clear Channel, you really hurt your listeners. Bring back Smooth Jazz and Michael Tozzi and our Artists we love or else we will all go to Satellite Radio. We don't want to hear Whoopi or your music that sounds like everything else. You have failed us. We will not support your new format nor we will support your sponsors. What junk!

59  Deven on September 14, 2006 7:44 PM

The Radio and Records Web site shows that Sunny 104.5 was never successful, averaging 15th in total listeners for the past two years. Even with the Christmas music, the station rose only to 10th in the Fall 2005 quarter (Oct-Dec.). In order for the station to survive, it had to make the perennial number one, B104, feel vulnerable, and that never happened. Combine that with advertisers who want to get to the big bucks that Hispanics are very willing to spend, and Sunny is now Rumba.

Now with WJJZ, I'm perplexed by blowing up this station instead of Q102--and not just from a music perspective, either. First, WJJZ often finished a few positions higher in the ratings than Q102 did, and second, I would think that Clear Channel would want to dump a pop station that consistently ranks between 10th and 15th when its pop stations in most other major markets are consistently in the top 5. Dallas's Kiss FM and Los Angeles's KIIS FM are now number one in their respective markets. Therefore, how in the world can CC not consider Q102, the only pop station in the sixth largest radio market in America, to be underperforming? The only explanation I can think of for Q102 still being on the air is that even with their low ratings, they still sell a ton of advertising.

Most people in radio know that Arbitron ratings inaccurately gauge the trends of a large audience. Often less than 0.1 percent of listeners in a market dictate which stations and personalities stay on the air. It has resulted in talented personalities losing their jobs and, sadly, listeners leaving radio for good.

60  Cindi on September 15, 2006 4:48 PM

It just boggles the mind...WHY take away our jazz?

61  Veda on September 16, 2006 1:37 AM

I thought my new radio was a dud!!!! I can't believe WJZZ is gone!! As others have said, no jazz in Philly is sacrilege! Some might say they didn't play real jazz. I guess they never heard of "progressive" jazz!!??
And, the thought of no more 24-hour Christmas music marathons is just depressing! Sad, very sad.
Somebody, buy them back!! PLEASE!!!!

62  chris on September 16, 2006 9:56 PM

Clear Channel certainly does not have a "clear" picture of what the public wants to hear on the radio. We want our Smooth Jazz back. Bring back all of our favorite artists and Michael Tozzi and his team.

Your new programming is an insult to our intelligence. We hope it will be an insult to your pocketbook because we will not listen nor we will support your sponsors.

63  Rose on September 18, 2006 10:39 AM

Chris (9/16/06) hit the nail right on the head. Clear channel has made a CLEAR mistake! What were they thinking?!! We do not need another hip hop station.

Smooth jazz was a daily dose of calm in a world of chaos.

Bring back SMOOTH JAZZ.

64  Renee on September 18, 2006 12:04 PM

What is Philly without Smooth Jazz; Grover Washington, Jr., Pieces of A Dream, some of Philly's finest! Smooth Jazz helped me relax during my work day. I hope it returns!

65  Jonathan on September 20, 2006 12:08 PM

WHAT HAPPENED TO SMOOTH JAZZ ON 106.1!! THIS

66  Jonathan on September 20, 2006 12:10 PM

WHAT HAPPENED TO SMOOTH JAZZ ON 106.1!! THIS new format plays the same stuff that all other stations play! Who needs more of that? 106.1 was the only station in the Philly area that played smooth jazz! I guess I'll have to either switch to my iPOD or sign up for satellite. Either way, I won't be listening to this station!!!!

67  Michele on September 20, 2006 3:26 PM

It is a crime that WJJZ has been removed from the airways. we don't need more of the same old thing. I thing Clear Channel needs to re evaluate it's decision. Bring back smooth Jazz!

68  Robin on September 21, 2006 3:49 PM

I've been listening to JJZ for years, starting in college. I will REALLY REALLY miss Michael Tozzi and the selections of smooth jazz. I like Whoopi, but we don't need another talk radio show as I drive into work in the morning - they're a dime a dozen. I'm really ticked off at Clear Channel, the way they went in there like a bull dozer and dismissed the staff. Sorry to see JJZ go like that...

69  JL on September 22, 2006 7:54 PM

I miss sunny 104.5 and the 3 months of x-mas music. Now it is Latin or something changed station to something else & do not listen to phillys 106.1. Very disappointed. Sunny was different - there is plenty of stations you can tune in and get the same old stuff!

70  chuck on September 24, 2006 3:20 PM

The new station is here to stay for now,its been over a month, and the constant repeats are gonna get old quick,,change it up !!!

71  Liz E on September 24, 2006 4:53 PM

How could you do this you have lost a listener. I tried but the new 106.1 sucks. We are not LA nor Seattle this is Philadelphia.. Now I have to turn to 107.9 or 105.3... Bring back 106.1 Smooth JAZZ. And Whoopi Goldberg sucks in the morning!!!!

72  MARYANN DURHAM on September 25, 2006 5:11 PM

THIS IS HORRIBLE, I LIKE WHOPPI BUT I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO SMOOTH JAZZ FOR A LONG TIME...THANK GOD I LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET SMOOTH JAZZ IN BALTIMORE...

73  claudia zuluaga on September 28, 2006 2:54 PM

THIS IS SOOOOOOO HORRILBE HOW COULD YOU GET RID OF
106.1. I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS GREAT STATION FOR EVER. HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO YOUR CAST AND LISTENERS. I HATE IT. PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE BRING IT BACK!!!

74  chris on September 30, 2006 4:19 PM

Clear Channel, big mistake! Bring back WJJZ Contemporary Jazz to Philly. The new format stinks. Mature-cultured people don't like your new programming and we don't like Whoopie. We will not support the sponsors of your new format.

75  Fred on October 1, 2006 1:01 PM

Just another person voicing my extreme displeasure in the loss of smooth jazz. Horrible loss.

76  mg on October 2, 2006 6:18 AM

Please bring back our jazz station. Now just about every station is either top 40, oldies or spanish........how about a unique radio station....please, please bring it back.

77  EB on October 9, 2006 2:47 PM

While I loved WJJZ, I think the new station is great! What a nice mix of songs to make my workday go by much faster. Unlike many others that have commented, I don't hear much this music played on other stations. Hopefully a new jazz station will turn up soon. Until then, I will keep listening to Philly's new 106.1.

78  Gwendolen on October 10, 2006 9:20 AM

As markets change, so do radio stations. I was so disappointed that the only worthwhile "free FM" station, WJJZ Smooth Jazz, is now extinct.

There is a two word solution to get Smooth Jazz: SIRIUS SATELLITE!

79  Terry on October 11, 2006 12:09 PM

Since Clear Channel took off Smooth Jazz, I listen to BEN FM 95.7. I was in the target group they were trying to attract and I think the music is repetative and so back in the day. You couldn't leave everything the way it was with 106.1 and 104.5?

80  Chris on October 16, 2006 6:12 PM

Smooth Jazz is returning to Philly according to Greater Media Radio who made the announcement. They will be broadcasting Smooth Jazz beginning next month on 97.5 Ben FM. Greater Media made this decision in response to the thousands of smooth jazz fans in Philly who were upset by the loss of their smooth jazz station.

Thank you Greater Media Radio!

I work the midnight shift at a military program and the kids are asleep well I went to turn on wjzz to do homework and I noticed it was gone. I really hadn't realized I mean I've passed through it a ton of times. But that was my relax station and the station to do my homework with it helps me think. I thought maybe it went away while i was gone with the military for the past year but no i was home when it happened. Now I'm upset I don't know how I'm going to do my homework without it.

82  Jeff on October 17, 2006 10:10 PM

An old friend died today,WJJZ Smooth Jazz! After several trips to Philadelphia in the last 15 years, I just cannot imagine being there again without the Jazz! Driving anywhere in and around Philly was always a breeze with WJJZ because it made the traffic melt away with ease. I will miss you 106.1! Philadelphia just will never be the same!

Why WJJZ had to go sway I will never know!! Now 106.1 is just another station to skip. I can't wait for 95.7 to start playing Smooth Jazz.

86  Cheryl on October 26, 2006 8:50 AM

Whoopie is great in the morning. I find myself laughing to myself driving to work. Also very informative. Go Philly - Excellent Choice!!!!

My husband and I were devisitated when we went to put our favorite station on and it was no longer. We have all but 2 of their Albums. I miss the introduction tune that would play at 7:00pm. It was so soothing and sexy.
I can't wait for 95.7 to start up. Please hurry...back.

My family and I listen to sunny 104.5 all the time. We especially like the Christmas music being played after Halloween. What station is going to play Christmas music now?! Bring back
104 and 106.

92  Jared on November 14, 2006 10:55 PM

when will Christmas music start? I need it now!

93  tele on November 15, 2006 12:03 PM

Same songs over and over but thats what they play at work.

94  Chris on November 15, 2006 11:01 PM

I miss WJJZ. I've listened to 'JJZ since it's inception and now there is no other good jazz station in Philly. Based on the responses I've read since August, the people of the JJZ listening area want jazz back...when will we be heard?? Is 97.5 FM on 11/17/06 our reprieve? I sure hope so

95  tera on November 18, 2006 6:41 PM

97.5 frequency must be weak,so far I have not been able to pick up good reception since trying to hear new jazz station 11/15/06 to this day.

"97.5 frequency must be weak,so far I have not been able to pick up good reception since trying to hear new jazz station 11/15/06 to this day."

Give them time. They plan to move the transmitter closer to Philly. For now, you'll just have to listen to them from the station site.

I LOVE the new station. I was painting my bedroom on Sunday morning and scrolling through the stations and I found 106.1 in error. I now have it programmed into all my stereo's in my home and cars.

Your music made my painting project go much faster with the variety of music and the memories the songs brought back!

98  Wanda M on November 22, 2006 12:32 PM

The new 106.1 is great! they play a variety of songs including the older songs from the 70's & 80's - I live in Lebanon County, PA but am originally from South Jersey and they don't have stations like that around here but fortunately I can get the Philly stations in most places. Keep the new 106.1 & Whoopi - I think she is funny!

I've been listening to WJJZ for years and it soothes my soul, makes my toes tap and helps me to be able to meet up with all the trials (and fun) of each day. When it went off the air I can't begin to articulate how this just frosted my biscuit! Two phone call and two letters later I tried to come up with an alternative - no go!- however, while at a friend's house in the midst of making Thanksgiving dinner preparations she put on the radio and fiddled for a station. While chopping away it SOON dawned on me the pleasure of the music I was listening to. I got up and went into the room that had the radio and was ABSOLUTELY STUNNED when I heard the station's call letters. I literally danced for joy! I'm just soooo excited and I can't hide it - every radio I have is tuned to it. Thank you Lord, for hearing all of our prayers and having all the idiot "geniuses" correct their blunder. Yeah!!!

The Jazz station in Philadelphia is now on 97.5. As far as 106.1 new format I love it! It is so great to hear a mix of songs all day and I love Frank Cerami's live broadcast Friday nights from Michael's Cafe in Bensalem. He is the best DJ and the live dance party from Michael's is a blast!

101  Lisa James on December 1, 2006 7:48 AM

How about a compromise. I like listening to Whoopi in the morning. But, I loved WJJZ. Bring it back!

102  not lisa on January 17, 2007 12:17 PM

just use 97.5, Lisa. haven't you got the memo? there's your compromise.

103  Marsha Pettine on January 31, 2007 2:05 PM

I wanted to let you know I really enjoy your station. Love Whoppi in the morning. Wanted to ask a question: Does Whoppi interview young music producers that are known in the Philadelphia area. I do business management for 2 producers and their managers. They were interviewed on 100.3 The Beat on Tuesday morning, January 30, 2007. I'm sure they would love to hook up with Whoppi. We are located right across the street from you on Presidential. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Marsha
